Haunt Me
A downloadable tabletop RPG
Trapped in a haunted house, a group of strangers are compelled to reveal their guilt over past mistakes if they wish to escape. Haunt Me is a short-form, experimental roleplaying game about the pain we hide from ourselves and others.
10 pgs. / Full Color / PDF
A deck of 52 playing cards (no Jokers) is required to play Haunt Me.
"While Haunt Me has the frame work of a party game and even has winners and losers (although you can argue who qualifies as which), it isn't really about figuring out who the ghost is. It's about exploring the nature of guilt and lies and truth."
-Lowell Kempf
Behind the Page
Haunt Me was originally created to take a breather between working on larger projects. I had some concepts I wanted to explore with regards to storytelling in a tabletop RPG that I felt would be interesting to turn into a smaller-format game. This manifested in Haunt Me where players are given a lot of leeway in telling a story of their choosing but within a certain framework. You can almost see a game of Haunt Me as a series of prompts that prod your narrative along rather than strictly a game where you're hoping to roll a critical hit or defeat the enemy, in general. Winning and losing is another element I wanted to experiment with - who are the true victors in some scenarios? Haunt Me defines certain outcomes depending on the cards you draw, but it doesn't explicitly determine a winner in a normal sense. All of the mechanics of the game are meant to constrain and free you in certain ways that are meant to evoke the main theme - that of hidden pain or guilt that one might keep from others.
Of course, the overall goal behind Haunt Me was to have a fun, short game that you and some friends can play and talk about. It is an experiment in storytelling for RPGs and is not meant to be the game that redefines narrative play on the tabletop for the next generation. That said, I hope that Haunt Me helps to spark something in you that will have you examining its elements if even for only a brief time.
Thank you for taking a look at Haunt Me,
-Daniel
